Remembering September 11
On September 11, 2001, we all learned that we are vulnerable to sudden and tragic loss. As we reflect a year later, we know that one year is a very short period of time to grieve a loss. In our 'instant' society we expect immediate gratification, and the same goes for resolution. Life is not that simple. It takes time to come to terms with bad things that happen to us and our loved ones. Give yourself that time.
One year seems to be the 'magic number' for resolving the death of a loved one. However, many people are only beginning the grieving process during the first year after a loss. One bereaved parent reflecting on the death of his infant daughter described the first year as a blur and the second year as the time to understand that his daughter had died.
Give yourself and your family the time it takes to come to terms with all the losses associated with September 11.
Some suggestions from last year are still applicable:
- Talk to your family, friends, or clergy about how you are feeling.
- If sadness persists or you are unable to do your activities of daily life, consult your physician or a mental health professional.
- Exercise in some way. Exercise releases endorphins, which are 'natural antidepressants' and make you feel better.
- Volunteer or donate money to a relief organization.
Children may need special help to cope with this tragedy. They will be sensitive to the way adults respond to this anniversary of the terrorist attack. You can:
- Reassure them that they are safe.
- Give them extra time and attention.
- Encourage them to express their emotions.
- Let them help in some way, such as writing letters to thank the rescue workers and let them know they are remembered.
